The
Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) yesterday unveiled the logo and mascot of
the Eighth Bangladesh Games to be held in the capital from April 20-28.
The mascot has been named “Tarunnya” with a popular squirrel showing a victory
sign wearing a games medal around his neck. The logo shows a graphical
representation of an acrobatic athlete with the five colours of the Olympic
rings and Bangladesh’s national flag colours of red and green.
State Minister for Youth and Sports and vice chairman of Games organising
committee, Ahad Ali Sarker, unveiled both logo and mascot while chairman of the
parliamentary standing committee on sports, Zahid Ahsan Rasel, sports secretary
Nur Mohammad, Information secretary Hedayetul Al Alam, steering committee of
the games Harunur Rashid and BOA acting secretary general Ashikur Rahman Miku
were among others present on the occasion.
“The squirrel is a symbol of speed and dynamism and it is found everywhere in
the country. So we think having a squirrel as mascot will bring spirit and
energy among the participants,” said member secretary of the ceremonies
committee, Lt Col Kamrul Hasan during the presentation of the mascot at the
National Sports Council Auditorium yesterday.
“During the design of the logo, we kept the colour of the five Olympic rings in
mind and emphasised the red and green of our national flag on the display,”
said Hasan, adding that the theme of the Bangladesh Games is “sports in our
heart”.
Sports Minister Ahad Ali Sarker, in his speech, said that his government would
be able to complete the Bangladesh Games successfully as they had earlier
staged the 2010 SA Games and the 2011 ICC World Cup successfully.
Ashikur Rahman Miku informed that the 356 events of 31 disciplines would take
place in 21 venues.
